Rubbish Collection
The powers that be (Tsukiyono Town) have
decreed that from April 1st, rubbish will be accepted for processing only if it
is put in special bags . Rubbish must be separated into seven categories
as below:
Categories 1 and 2 : Burnable Trash
| Category 1 |
Incinerator Trash |
| Examples |
Kitchen scraps, waste paper, kleenex tissues, wood scraps, newspapers,
magazines, paper diapers, etc. |
| Category 2 |
Waste Plastic Trash |
| Examples |
Plastic bottles, condiment containers, vinyl kitchen wraps, sponges, toys,
cassette tapes, plastic and vinyl bags,
etc. |
Category 1 and Category 2 items
are to be put separately in town-approved bags. Bags are for sale at a number of
licensed stores: Cainz Home is perhaps the closest. Bags are white with
green lettering and come in three sizes from 25 to 70 Yen a piece.
Categories 3 to 7 : Non-Burnable Trash
| Category 3 |
Empty Drinks' Cans |
| Examples |
Tin
or aluminum cans containing drinks (juice, soft drinks, beer, sake,
etc.). |
| Category 4 |
Empty Glass Drinks' Bottles |
| Examples |
Bottled juice, soft drinks, beer, sake, etc. |
| Category 5 |
Metal & Glass |
| Examples |
Small metal items, empty tin or aluminum cans (except drinks' cans; see
category 3), empty glass bottles (except drinks' bottles, see category 4),
dishes, plates, pots and pans, aluminum foil, light bulbs (except
fluorescent and mercury bulbs, see category 7), umbrellas, knives, broken
glass, etc. |
| Category 6 |
Extra-Large Items |
| Examples |
Large household electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, tin sheeting,
skis, bicycles, rugs, carpets, tatami, large wooden things, etc. |
| Category 7 |
Dangerous Items |
| Examples |
Dry-cell batteries, car batteries, fluorescent and mercury bulbs,
thermometers, mirrors, etc. |
Category 3 to Category 5 items too are to be put separately in
town-approved bags. Bags are also for sale at Cainz Home. Bags are of
transparent vinyl with blue lettering lettering and come in two sizes, 40 and 80
Yen a piece.
Category 6 are to be put in the same kind of bags as
Category 3 to Category 5 unless there are too large to fit in
garbage bags; in that case you are requested to attach an 80 Yen trash disposal
ticket to each appliance as it is.
Category 7 items are to be placed
in vinyl garbage bags other than the special town-approved bags. There is no 80
Yen trash disposal ticket required for Category 7 items, but you are
requested to attach a label to each bag indicating the contents.
Rubbish Collection at the Chalets
The above has been more or less
literally translated from the Japanese directions distributed to households by
the town office. The translator (Jack) finds the directions a bit complicated;
if you are able and willing to abide by them, well and good, I will see that
your rubbish is picked up as usual.
Otherwise, it seems to me you have two alternatives: either take your rubbish
back to Tokyo or, if you are willing to pay me an extra fee of 2,000 Yen per
month, I will pick up your trash (and take it to the appropriate place) if you
will separate it as follows: Category 1 Trash (food scraps, waste paper, etc.)
in one bag, Category 2 Trash (plastic, vinyl, synthetics, etc.) in another bag,
and in separate bags a) metal items and b) glass items except Category 7
(dangerous items). Put dangerous items (mirrors, batteries, fluorescent bulbs,
etc.) in a separate bag.
Notes
Burnable Rubbish
- Category 1 and Category 2 items are to be put in the
(separate) white bags with green lettering. Otherwise they will not be
collected.
- Raw garbage, leftover food, etc., should have as much fluid as possible
drained away and then be wrapped in newspaper before being put in bag.
- Please remove excrement from disposable diapers before putting them in
bags.
- Please break thinks such as sharp-pointed bamboo skewers so that they are
no longer dangerous.
- Please cut such things as front-door mats down to 30 cm size.
- Cut wood to below 30 cm in length.
- Please remove metal fittings from belts, handbags, etc.
- If you wish, you may take your rubbish directly, in appropriate bags, to
the Oku Tone 'Amenity Park' in Niiharu village. In this case it is free so
there is no need to attach a trash disposal ticket to the bags.
Non-Burnable Rubbish
- Non-burnable rubbish goes in the transparent bags with blue lettering.
- When putting out non-burnable items, do not place them in other bags or
paste-board boxes before putting them in the town-approved bags.
- Non-burnable items too large for garbage bags (such as Category 6
items) must have an 80 Yen trash disposal ticket, with your name on it,
attached to them (one ticket for each item too large for garbage bags).
- Bottles and cans must be emptied and lightly rinsed before being put out.
- Please remove all caps or covers from bottles; bottle caps to be thrown
out with Category 5 items.
- Rugs and carpets must be cut into strips under 30 cm x 300 cm.
- Spray cans, gas cassette cylinders, etc. are dangerous. Please empty them
completely and (in the open air) puncture them before throwing them out.
- Please wrap in heavy paper such dangerous things as broken glass. sharp
pointed objects, etc.
- Put each Category 7 (Dangerous items) thing into a separate garbage
bag (an ordinary vinyl garbage bag; not the town-approved bags). Do not break
fluorescent or mercury bulbs; put them into the containers they came in and
then into garbage bags.
- Category 7 rubbish collection is free.
- If you wish, you may take yourself your rubbish (in appropriate bags) and
large items ('sodai gomi'), that you want to dispose of to the Oku Tone
'Amenity Park' in Niiharu village. In this case it is free so there is no need
to attach a trash disposal ticket to the large items which cannot fit into the
garbage bags.
